Kali, Inspirer of Insight "The whole universe is created by Kali," says the Shiva Purana. In this pure black Bangladesh image, her luxuriantly flowing hair and outstretched arms reveal her power over Time, while quiet-gazing Shiva supports her. Kali's garland of demon heads represents both her detachment from the world and her inner nature of deep compassion. Her fierce wisdom slays ignorance, giving bloom to flowers of hope and healing.

Bhairavi means "terrible." The Tantras says of Bhairavi, " Softly smiling, you shine with a crimson glow that may be compared to a thousand newly risen suns. You wear a silken veil and a garland of skulls. Blood smears your breast. Three voluptuous eyes adorn your lotus face; the moon is your diadem. Your lotus hands show the gestures of victory of wisdom, the granting of boons, and the allaying of fear."

She causes the burning and destruction of all limitations, preconceived ideas, erroneous conceptions, and illusions regarding our individual existence. Her specific action is necessary for protecting us from harmful influences and for guiding us in spiritual growth. A mother defending her children, the Great Cosmic Power Tripura Bhairavi, is destroyer of the obstacles and hardships on the spiritual path.

She is one of the ten Objects of Transcendent Knowledge (maha-vidya). It is through the destruction of all that appears to us desirable and by facing what appears to us most fearful, that we can become free from bondage and attain the aim of our existence, the limitless supreme bliss of nonexistence.

Depicted seated upon or holding the lotus, symbol of spiritual purity, fertility and vegetative growth, the goddess Sri (Laxshmi) is venerated, like Ganesh, for her auspicious nature. She carries a coffer, and gold coins shower from her hand, and she represents the supreme divine principle which pervades all creation with vitality and consciousness. Actively venerated by nearly 1 billion Hindus, Laxshmi is the modern face of the ancient Great Mother Goddess; stalks of grain surrounding her head connote a rich harvest.

Laxshmi Goddess of Prosperity and Good Fortune

Laxshmi, or Sri, is the Hindu Goddess of love and beauty and the Indian equivalent of Aphrodite, for she was born on a lotus from the churning of the milky sea when her consort Vishnu manifested as a tortoise avatar. She has strong associations with the fall festival of Divali.

Here she is shown offering boons and blessings and holding the lotus flowers.

Masculine-Feminine Balance. Kingly Vishnu, sustainer of order in the world, is depicted in loving association with his spouse Sri Laxshmi, giver of vitality to all living things. Their intimate posture seated together is a micro-depiction of domestic cooperation and joy. A larger symbolism suggests universal harmony as Laxshmi's stupendous power of Shakti activates Vishnu by tickling his feet. The magic serpent Ananta, upon whose body the duo recline, is the embodiment of creative fertility.

Parvati the Mountain Mother Goddess. Parvati is the consort of Shiva with whom she is often portrayed as an idealized divine family, along with their children Ganesh and Skanda. Parvati is a very benevolent goddess who absorbs Shiva's spiritual and sexual energy and releases it in the world for the benefit of all. Glowing skinned, Parvati is the daughter of the Himalayas. In this beautifully adorned image, she stands with right hand raised as if holding a flower.

Sarasvati – Ancient Agricultural Mother Goddess of Learning and Music. Sarasvati offers her generous help with all learning and creative endeavors and for this she is greatly honored by all whom she has touched. Sarasvati is credited with the creation of Sanskrit. Terracotta figures dating to 2500 B.C.E. have been found in the Indus valley denoting her importance from ancient times through today.

Vaishno Devi, who combines elements of Lakshmi and Durga, is an extremely benevolent manifestation of the eternal virgin who gives material well-being to her worshipers. One million pilgrims travel annually to her cave shrine in the foothills of the Himalayas, about fifty kilometers north of the city of Jammu.
