Hathor, the Egyptian Mother of the Gods.

The heavenly womb, Hathor brought forth in primeval time herself, never having been created. Her temples were birthing rooms bearing images of the seven frame drum and sistrum playing Hathors who brought blessed souls to newborns.These deities conferred their protection upon the newborn child.

During childbirth, in ancient Egypt, a woman would squat on a pair of elaborately decorated clay bricks, that show a woman transformed into a goddess at the moment of giving birth, and recite spells to call on Hathor, the goddess of fertility and motherhood in an effort to protect her newborn child. Birth was not just a physical event, but a supercharged magical and religious time. Ancient Egyptians equated the birth of a child to the birth of the sun on the eastern horizon.

A goddess of pleasure and royal succession Hathor is older than the earliest Egyptian dynasties.

In this Hellenistic statue from Alexandria, Egypt, the Baubo gesture is given by none other than Isis, the original "Mother of God." She wears a full-length gown, ceremonial headdress and tranquil smile. Her affirming stance says: "We are the life-givers.... It is our vulvas, our wombs, that are the center. Never forget that!"

With her sun-disc/moon crescent crown in this statue, Isis Queen of Heaven and Earth represents the Mother Goddess aspect. She is the prototype of the Mother of God later adopted by the Christian tradition. Sekmet, the ravaging lioness, with her burning solar eye, is the goddess's destroyer/devourer aspect.

When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in the 4th century B.C.E., Egyptian art took a decidedly Hellenistic turn. This beautiful reproduction of the black basalt statues recently recovered from the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Alexandria is the classical Lady whose "divinity is adored throughout all the world in divers manners, in variable customs, and by many names." As Apuleius describes Her speech, "I am she that is the natural mother of all things, mistress and governess of all the elements, the initial progeny of worlds, chief of the powers divine, queen of all that are in hell, the principal of them that dwell in heaven, manifested alone and under one form of all the gods and goddesses."
